How To Be A Lady Who Leaves
by Emma Heptonstall
Can you share a bit about your back story with us.
I’m a former lawyer, family mediator and divorce coach. I specialise in supporting ladies who want to leave their husbands make smart emotional and financial decisions on divorce.
From my legal and mediation experience, I knew that women often feel disenfranchised in the divorce process. Many stay in relationships that no longer serve them for far too long. It doesn’t have to be that way.
How and when did you know that you wanted to write a book?
I’d been divorce coaching for approximately two years when I began to seriously consider writing a book that would support women with the legal and emotional aspects of the divorce process. Nothing else like it existed for the English market. There is still an assumption that women don’t leave their husbands, but they do!
I knew that writing this book would also raise the profile of my business – which it did!
Tell us about your book.
How to be a Lady Who Leaves – The Ultimate Guide to Getting Divorce Ready is a practical guide to the divorce process in England & Wales. The first section of the book is all about the decision to leave and being sure that leaving is the right decision.
The book then outlines the divorce process in England and Wales, including chapters on financial disclosure, children, family mediation, taking care of yourself during divorce and how to move forward.
With action steps, exercises and case studies of coaching clients, How to be a Lady Who Leaves the Ultimate Guide to Getting Divorce Ready is in it’s 2nd edition.
The book was also an Amazon best seller in September 2017.
What were the hardest things you faced whilst you were writing it?
The most difficult aspect of writing my book was time! I’m so grateful that I worked with Karen Williams of Librotas. Karen supported me every step of the way, keeping me accountable and motivated, ensuring that I made the time I needed to get the manuscript completed. It took me 366 days in total! Karen’s team then supported me with the publishing and marketing – all I did was write!
What were the best things you experienced during the process?
The best thing about writing me book was holding the first printed copy in my hand! I couldn’t quite believe I’d done it. The process taught me a lot about myself – that I can achieve whatever I want.
The initial proof readers gave me constructive feedback to improve the book and the confidence to know that I’d written a book that women wanted to read.
What’s next for you?
The impact of writing my book on my business has been phenomenal. I’ve featured in the iPaper, You Magazine and on BBC Radio to name but a few. Working with clients who only found out about divorce coaching through reading my book is still such a thrill! I’m seriously considering writing another book in 2019, but I’m not able to share about that just yet!
